MES Family Update- Week #2 August 24, 2026
What a wonderful start to the school year! After just two days, our classrooms are already filled with smiling faces, new friendships, and lots of learning. We have been so excited to greet returning Lions, and meet new Lions over the first two days.
We know the first few days of school can be exciting, but tiring, as students adjust to new routines, teachers, classmates, and schedules. We are so proud of how our students have started the year and appreciate your support in helping make the transition a smooth one.
Students have shown excitement about the condition of the building, but construction still presents some challenges to daily operations. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we adjust to make those operations as smooth as possible.
Construction Update: Renovation work was generally paused, with just a few smaller projects, while school was opened. The work will pick back up next week with the renovation of the kindergarten/first grade wing. This area will become the “green hall”. Work in the front of the building is almost entirely finished, allowing for effective traffic patterns to start school. For that, I am very grateful. It is worth mentioning that Alger’s Excavation, the company that did all of the site work out front, did an amazing job on the grading, sidewalks and paved areas. The rough asphalt that you feel upon entering MES was the result of work completed by VDOT, not Alger’s. VDOT has indicated that they plan to repave the entrance road to MES next summer. I will coordinate with the Lantz Construction team to schedule an evening in September for a community Open House. The finished areas help provide a vision of how the school will look when fully renovated.

ANNUAL NOTIFICATION:
In accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Act in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency, we are making our yearly notification that our school building contains asbestos containing material. An operation and management plan was developed in 1988, and all 3-year follow-up inspections have been conducted to help us manage the materials in a manner that eases the safety of our students, employees, and vendors. You may examine the O & M plans located in the division maintenance office from 8 – 4 Monday through Friday, or you may contact the division Asbestos Coordinator at 434-4434.
