Week #28- March 9

Reading Month!

In honor of reading month, we want to give some tips on how to practice certain skills at home!  Practicing sight words for younger grades can be very helpful to improve automaticity.  Repeated practice nightly builds the connection and helps reinforce what is taught at school.  In upper grades, practicing fluency can increase the rate at which your student reads.  This can be easily practiced at home with “cold” reads of something on their level.  A “cold” read is simply something that is read for the first time.  As your student reads, put a timer on for a minute, and when the timer stops, count the words they read.  This is their Words Per Minute.  Doing this can also lead to many different conversations about words, and don’t forget to ask them about what they read to practice comprehension!  Challenge your student to use different words in conversation, and maybe even write them down in their journal (i.e. instead of using awesome, what words can you use?). Practice writing with journal entries, letters, and birthday cards to reinforce spelling and word skills.

We are logging minutes students read to work our way along the Appalachian Trail while we learn about the states we pass through on our way to Maine.

Literacy Night is coming!  Please see the links below for more information!

Construction Update: Concrete trucks will be on site Monday morning if all goes as planned. The Lantz team will try to work around arrival traffic as much as possible, but there could be some impact to the normal flow. Block work continues in the kindergarten/1st grade bathroom area. These bathrooms should be back online as students return from Spring Break.

A note regarding safety: The MES property is an active construction site, even beyond normal school hours. Please be cautious when visiting after school hours and avoid allowing children to play unsupervised on school grounds. The upper playground, where the basketball courts are located, should be fine.
