Week #7- September 29, 2025

Student Growth at MES!

We are committed to helping every student grow as a learner. One of the ways we do this is by using data-driven instruction. This means we regularly check in on your child’s progress and use that information to guide what and how we teach. By keeping track of growth, we can celebrate achievements, identify areas for improvement, and provide support where it’s needed most.

Reading Growth

In reading, we use several tools to understand each student’s strengths and next steps:

  • CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts): Provides a strong foundation in phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

  • VALLS (Virginia Language and Literacy Screener): Helps us identify where students are thriving and where they may need additional support in early literacy.

  • mClass: Gives teachers a snapshot of your child’s reading skills, helping us tailor instruction and small groups.

These resources ensure that we’re not only teaching reading but also monitoring how each child is growing over time.

Math Growth

In math, students practice skills and track progress through IXL. This program adjusts to each child’s level, offering practice that meets them right where they are and helps them build confidence as they move forward. Teachers also use data from IXL to see how students are mastering skills and which areas may need reteaching.

How you can help:

  • Ask your child what they’re learning in reading and math. Encourage them to explain in their own words.

  • Read together daily. Even 10–15 minutes makes a difference.

  • Celebrate progress. Growth happens step by step—cheering on small wins helps build confidence and motivation.

Thank you for partnering with us in supporting your child’s growth.
